It Takes a Village: How Baby of the Year Built a Nationwide Parent Community

It takes a village - baby of the year

Every parent knows that it takes a village to raise a kid. Families are near and far, neighbors don’t always know each other, and early parenthood can feel surprisingly lonely. Between sleepless nights, teething, toddler meltdowns, and trying to figure everything out as you go, many parents are doing it without much support around them.

That’s one reason so many families find Baby of the Year so meaningful. On the surface, Colossal’s Baby of the Year is an online competition celebrating adorable babies, with a $25,000 prize, an appearance in a national ad campaign with The Honest Company, and a feature in a Variety Magazine advertorial. But for many parents who participate, it becomes something more — a place to connect with other people going through the exact same stage of life.

Finding Community Through Shared Experiences

No matter where you live or what your background is, parenting has a way of creating instant common ground.

Throughout the competition, parents don’t just post photos and ask for votes. They share stories, milestones, struggles, and funny moments from everyday life when they choose to. Social media comment sections turn into conversations. Parents swap advice, celebrate each other’s kids, and offer encouragement during hard days.

What surprises a lot of people is how supportive the environment becomes. Instead of feeling overly competitive, many participants describe it as uplifting — a reminder that there are other parents out there navigating the same challenges. Every first step, messy birthday cake photo, and goofy grin gets cheered on by people who genuinely understand why those moments matter.

More Than Any Ol’ Online Contest

Not a contest but a competition baby of the year

Another thing that sets Baby of the Year apart is the educational side of the experience.  Throughout the competition, parents unlock access to workshops and resources on topics that matter in real life, including sleep routines, emotional development, and child safety. For many families, those conversations become just as valuable as the competition itself.

One participant shared: “The community gave me a sense of belonging when I felt incredibly isolated as a new mom. Even just hearing from other parents going through the same things made a huge difference.”

Coming Together for Something Bigger: Baby2Baby

The competition also gives families a chance to support a larger cause together.  While everyone gets one free vote every day, votes by donation are also available to support Baby2Baby, a nonprofit that provides children living in poverty with essentials like diapers, clothing, formula, and hygiene products. The organization was founded by Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, with support from Baby2Baby Angels including Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton, and Jenna Dewan (who also serve as 2026 Baby of the Year ambassadors).

For many participating parents, that charitable aspect gives the experience a deeper sense of purpose. Families aren’t just celebrating their own children — they’re helping support families in need, too.

What Parents Really Take Away From Baby of the Year

At the end of the competition, one baby will earn the grand prize and appear in a national ad campaign with The Honest Company, win $25,000, and be celebrated in the pages of Variety Magazine. But for many of the parents involved, the biggest takeaway isn’t the spotlight. It’s the friendships formed in comment sections, the advice shared during stressful moments, the encouragement from strangers who became familiar faces online, and the feeling of being part of something supportive during a stage of life that can sometimes feel isolating.

In a world where modern parenting can often feel disconnected, that sense of community often becomes the most valuable part of the experience.
